The Azores are a nine-island archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. They are approximately 4 1/2 hours by air from New England and about 2 1/2 hours by air from Lisbon, Portugal. They are indeed the western-most extension of Europe. Their climate is mild year-round with lows in the mid fifties farenheit in the winter and highs in the low eighties in the summer. Their vegetation is lush sub-tropical with an abundance of wild flowers. They are famous for unusual species of birds as well as having great deep sea fishing as well as many opportunities to observe marine mammals such as dolphins and whales.
